In this video Karen Thompson Walker starts off by telling the story of the Essex ship and the fear that the crew faced when their main ship sunk. Walker goes on to say that fear is a big part of our everyday life and how we get caught up in it sometimes. Then she proposes that if we looked at fear in such that it is like a novel and we are the reader as well as the author we could be ready for all outcomes. She then explains how the crew had difficult options on where to go. Eventually they ended up choosing the path that seemed less gruesome in their imaginations which ultimately led most of them to death. She then talks about how if they looked at the whole picture as the author and the reader they would of been able to make a more intelligent choice.
I really enjoyed this talk and how she explained fear as a novel. If everyone truly thought about fear as a story and us as both the authors as well as the readers I think we would be better at overcoming it. If you truly think about it fear is something that we create, so we can overcome it by being intelligent and thinking about the options we have to do so. I think Walker did a great job explaining her point and it was really clear and thorough. Next time fear is apporaching I will have a different way of dealing with it.
